Brit Insurance Charitable Trust and British Red Cross enter partnership
Brit Insurance Holdings PLC ("the Group") is pleased to announce that The Brit Insurance Charitable Trust (“the Trust”) has entered a three year partnership with the British Red Cross, as partnership with the British Red Cross.
November 30, 2007
Brit Insurance Holdings PLC ("the Group"), the UK-domiciled international general insurer and reinsurer, is pleased to announce that The Brit Insurance Charitable Trust ("the Trust") has entered a three year partnership with the British Red Cross, as part of the Group's wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
The Group established the Trust in 2006. Funded from up to 0.5% of the Group's pre-tax profit, the Trust is used to support a number of activities, a key component of which is a long-term partnership with a national charity.
As part of the new partnership with the British Red Cross, the Trust will be sponsoring:
Emergency vehicles such as the Emergency Response Unit, the first vehicle of its kind in the UK. The vehicles will be allocated according to the needs of the British Red Cross operations in nine major UK cities
Vital equipment such as airshelters, resuscitation mannequins and communications systems
The recruitment and training of more British Red Cross volunteers
The ‘prepare for the unexpected’ webpages, designed to help better prepare communities across the UK to cope with emergencies
Dane Douetil, Trustee of The Brit Insurance Charitable Trust and CEO at Brit Insurance, commented:
"The Brit Insurance Charitable Trust and the British Red Cross share a common purpose: a commitment to helping reduce the impact of disasters. The Trust's sponsorship will help the British Red Cross provide enhanced practical support to major incidents, such as a flood or train crash, and practical and emotional support at the scene of a fire. The support that we as trustees can give to the British Red Cross throughout the UK complements our work overseas, where we are involved in ongoing projects to help the victims of natural disasters such as the 2004 Asian Tsunami, the 2005 Earthquake in Pakistan and this month's Cyclone in Bangladesh."
Nick Young, Chief Executive of the British Red Cross said:
"We are extremely grateful for the fantastically generous support of The Brit Insurance Charitable Trust to fund our essential lifesaving work in the UK. This is a partnership that will save lives - it's a simple as that."

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
Brit Insurance's CSR Community and Charitable Giving programme also include:
Employee schemes
The Group gives its employees the opportunity to take 2 additional days as holiday per calendar year to volunteer their time through schemes offered by Brit Insurance’s charity partners. Activities range from helping to reunite families and restore links between close relatives separated by war or disasters, providing practical support to elderly people, raising awareness of humanitarian issues in elementary schools to mentoring young children to develop sports skills.
As part of its wider CSR programme, all employees raising a minimum of £100 for a UK registered charity of their choice are eligible via the Trust for a £1 for £1 matching, up to £5,000 per application.
Surrey County Cricket Club (SCCC)
The Group has been sponsoring the SCCC disability and playground markings programmes since 2005. The disability programme is intended to help Surrey Cricket develop a full County side representing Surrey within four categories: Visually Impaired, Learning Disability, Mixed Physical and Hearing Impaired. The programme covers school coaching, festivals for selection, county training and matches during the summer.
The Playground markings programme is aimed at ensuring a minimum of one Primary school in each of the five Surrey Cricket districts receive new playground cricket markings each year. Community cricket programmes for children with learning or physical disabilities have also been established in seven London boroughs [Croydon, Kingston, Lambeth, Merton, Southwork, Sutton and Wandsworth]. In total each year 47 groups of children from 21 special needs schools received blocks of coaching (primarily in curriculum time) and also participated in cricket festivals at LCCA1 Cricket Centre, Chessington Cricket Club & Dulwich.
1. The London Community Cricket Association is a charity which supports estates which have little or no sporting provision.
Lloyds Community Programme (LCP) Day
The Group sponsored the use of the Brit Oval for two consecutive years for the Lloyd's Cricket Cup Tournament. In June 2007, some 180 children from 6 different schools in Hackney and Tower Hamlets battled it out on the oldest test match venue in the world, assisted by Brit, Lloyd's and Surrey staff who volunteered to coach the children for the day. The children had the opportunity to meet Richard Clinton, Surrey County cricketer who also presented the awards.
