Appointment of Senior Independent Director and Committee Chairmen

Brit Insurance Holdings PLC ("Brit Insurance"or "The Group", the UK-domiciled international general insurer and reinsurer, today announces the appointment of Cees Schrauwers as Senior Independent Director with effect from 1 December 2006.

Cees Schrauwers succeeds Don McCrickard who is retiring at the end of this year, as disclosed in the annual report and accounts for the year ended 31 December 2005.

Additionally, Michael Smith and Joe MacHale will take over as Chairmen of the Nomination and Remuneration Committees respectively on the same date. Peter Hazell continues to chair the Audit Committee.

Clive Coates, Chairman of Brit Insurance, commented: "I would like to thank Don for his immense contribution to the Group since its flotation in 1995, and wish Cees, Michael and Joe every success in their new roles."

Cees Schrauwers joined the Group's Board in June 2005. He is Chairman of Alio Limited and DriveAssist UK Limited.

Michael Smith joined the Board in March 2004. He is a trustee of the Foyle Foundation, the Batty Charitable Trust and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery Development Foundation and the Oval Cricket Relief Trust.

Joe MacHale was appointed to the Board in November 2005. He is currently a non-executive director and member of the audit committee of Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, senior independent non-executive director and chairman of the audit committee of Morgan Crucible plc, chairman of Prytania Group and a trustee of Macmillan Cancer Support.
